THERE ARE BANDS THAT GROW WITH EVERY ALBUM. PURWIEN & KOWA DON’T. With SECHS, CHRISTIAN PURWIEN (vocals, lyrics, occasional attitude) and THOMAS KOWA (synthesizers, songs, occasional delusions of grandeur) deliver their sixth album – and once again prove that you can simply keep going, even without success.
The album was produced by OLAF WOLLSCHLÄGER, who is either extremely patient or actually understands their sense of humour. Probably both. Musically, SECHS sits somewhere between 80s nostalgia, ironic self-destruction and the desperate attempt to finally write a hit (spoiler: see ITALO DISCO IN SAN FRANCISCO).
While other bands desperately try to stay relevant, PURWIEN & KOWA have decided to remain consistently irrelevant. They produce podcasts about the 80s, release albums based on mathematically questionable concepts, and actively recommend not listening to their other band, HELDAUTOMAT. That alone takes courage.
SECHS is an album about big themes: love, loss, system critique, synthesizers and caviar on airplanes. But above all, it’s an album about two people who know exactly what they’re doing – and do it anyway. And that’s why it works.
Or, to put it in the band’s own words: WE’RE WRONG. And that’s perfectly fine.
