The term "witch house" has been bandied about with a lot of
empty hype, but the movement itself existed before the term was
coined, and there is indeed something intriguing happening with
many of the artists who have claimed the title. The idiom
associates heavy, arty electronic music with a strong visual
representation in video projections and other media. Take Modern
Witch, for example-it's arguably the group that inspired the
term, and its visual output is inseparable from its music.
Thus we have Dark Secrets Of The New Age, an ultra-limited
CD/DVD release that offers up six videos and eight songs. The
videos are grainy, timeless, and creepy, like a low-budget
horror film from the early '70s run through a wringer of
psychedelic effects. The music is built from slow, deliberate,
and basic beats that push a brand new style of warped harmony at
us from the other side of the laptop.
As the album picks up speed, so does the imagery, transforming
into a piece inspired by early MTV, hacked apart by colors in a
strange combination of analog and digital distortion. The album
is fascinating and beautiful, creating a hodgepodge of the
present with the immediate past in a strange audio/video
collage. There's an obsession with symmetry apparent here, and a
sense of disembodied voices and blurred sentiments, with
apparitions of the past imprinting themselves upon our
consciousness as we try to understand what's happening now. Dark
Secrets Of The New Age isn't so much a collection of songs as it
is a mood to fall into, with trance-like voices on repeat
throughout, and lots of colors everywhere you look.
