Fostercare is music to watch. Press your hands hard against your
eyes and wait for whatever shapes the dark creates. Look at hell
through a kaleidoscope, then super-impose that image on the
grainy, swirling fluff of a PBS-broadcast Swan Lake. This is the
visceral experience of Heaven's Gate.
Not that Fostercare needs the visuals. Imagery to them isn't
some crutch propping up an otherwise hum-drum project. It's just
that each of the seven tracks on this CD/DVD benefits so greatly
from its accompanying video, you barely want to know a world
where one exists without the other. Even the near-perfect
"Mask", with those sexy monotone murmurs and the best
arpeggiated hook on the album (think Olof Dreijer meets
Christopher Greenspan), explodes into this all-encompassed
happening with its graphic layer of birds and lightning and
yellowed family footage. Fostercare makes videos like some
producers make songs: a pile of samples, visual cues glitchy and
morphed, Sinead O'Connor and Marshall Applewhite and so much
wildlife creating this thing with traceable roots, sure, but a
sense of place that totally belies them. Heaven's Gate isn't as
terrifying as, say, MSV's Second Coming, but it doesn't need to
be. Fostercare's strength is blurring the lines between
soundscape and landscape, and watching what happens when one
becomes dependent on the other.
'Course, you can listen to the songs alone. Knock yourself out.
"Anytime" and its piercing, panicked glitch. The chilly synth
fifths of "Bonfire" and the way it lurches, then stops. That
mid-album combo of the catchy, creepily ambient "Body Search"
and "Mask"; it's all solid, witch-inflected stuff. But if you
want to disappear into the Heaven's Gate world, hypnotized and
without a trace? Turn off the lights, put on your headphones and
let the full experience steal your body like a so-high fever.
You'll be gone before you know it.
