Suicide's Martin Rev unleashes his classical album, all arranged on synthetic instrumentation - probably MIDI-triggered samples. And you can really tell, especially on the pizzicato trundle 'Jubilate' or the peerlessly silly full-orchestra (sort of) pomp of 'Exultate'. 'Sanctus' might be even more comical, and seems all the more absurd given its positioning in the tracklist next to something wholly more convincing like 'Salve' - A Harold Budd like ambient flirtation. Next, 'Spiritus' is like a bizarre Disney soundtrack submerged in a big tub of reverb, while further on in the record 'Anima Mea' comes across as a synth-orchestra score to some cheap early-nineties American TV movie - it's a Hallmark nightmare. This is what makes the album rather good though. It's gregarious and absurd in ways that no other 'classical' album would dare to be. The fact that Rev has decided to program everything in MIDI rather than bother with real musicians only makes Stigmata all the more idiosyncratic and undiluted in its vision.
