In The Eden House, there is no one singer. Just one intention; to create a coalition of
beauty in music, vocals, talent and soul.
In this new collaborative project the core members are Stephen Carey, formerly of IrelandÆs
This Burning Effigy; and Tony Pettitt, formerly of the influential Fields of The Nephilim.
With each song various accomplished musicians have been involved, bringing in their own
unique talents and trademark sounds to produce the atmospheric debut album that is
"Smoke & Mirrors".
The vocalists who have graced The Eden House to produce these darkly beautiful songs are
Julianne Regan (All About Eve), Evi Vine, Amandine Ferrari and Monica Richards (Faith & The
Muse). Also contributing are violinist Bob Loveday (Penguin Cafe' Orchestra, Van Morrison,
as well as currently Bob Geldof's band), former Fields of The Nephilim Peter Yates, Nod
Wright and Paul Wright, along with drummers Simon Rippin (Nefilim, NFD) and Bob Irwin
(Johnny Cash, Van Morrison).

To use the phrase "eagerly anticipated" doesn't do this release justice. And just incase you
haven't been paying attention, The Eden House is the brain child of Stephen Carey and Tony
Pettitt - and quite a few contributors (inc ex-Nephs/Nefs, Paul & Nod Wright, Peter Yates
and Simon Rippin). The project was originally described thus, "The Eden House isn't a band
as such and will remain primarily studio based. We will regularly post new songs/mixes as we
create them. If there is enough interest we will compile the result for CD release." True to
their word, several demos have since appeared online - with each one garnering acclaim and
fans clamouring for a release, and then, with the announcement in April 2008 that The Eden
House had signed to Jungle Records we could finally look forward to a release.
With so many contributors, there was always the possiblity that this could've ended up with
no direction and inconsequential. Luckily, Stephen and Tony have kept tight reins on the
project and trimmed the parts that needed trimming. Gone are the male vocal guests - the all
female voices of Monica Richards, Julianne Regan, Amandine Ferrari and Evi Vine, add their
distinction and create a direction, but in unique way that doesn't diversify the overall
sound. And this isn't Fields Of The Nephilim either, nor NFD. No, this is something different. The words ethereal and atmospheric readily spring to mind, with, to coin a phrase
"pop sensibilities" but thats not to say these songs can't be powerful and dynamic.
And now that release is almost upon us. First up is "To Believe In Something". One of the
songs thats been available online for a while, so you probably heard it. What you haven't
heard is this in CD quality. Yes, as mentioned, its powerful and dynamic - with one of
Tony's awesome bass lines, just turn it up and be taken somewhere else. To be honest, I've
never been a fan of All About Eve, but when Julianne turns in the first of her vocal
performances on the sweeping majesty of "All My love", I'm won over. Perhaps the only fault
of this CD is the guitar on the latter half of the song should've been more prominant, its
just that good. But beyond this, trying to review this CD track by track proved to be a
fruitless task - its just too hard to pick out the good songs, let alone the good bits. I
think its that good. Quality and quantity, no disposable filler tracks here, just ten great
quality compositions. And its not only the song writing/playing, it must be said, hats off
to Andy Jackson, who's mastering of this disc is superb. The clarity of this CD is
outstanding, only enhancing the pleasure of enjoying this disc.
Even though we're only at the end of February, its much too early to be bandying around
comments like "album of the year"... isn't it? Either way, its a prime contender, thats for
sure.
