PreCog is an American dark electronica/synthpop group based in Nashville, Tennessee. Since forming in late 2015, PreCog has been part of the growth of the underground electronica movement in the place nicknamed Music City, USA. The group’s frontman, Jason Thomas, has been writing and performing for over 15 years. With a strong passion for groups like Massive Attack and Portishead, his lyrics often look at the dark side of life, and he brings his love of “all things spooky” into his music. Producer and synth player Gerald Josef has been in the music industry for over 30 years in a wide range of projects, while guitarist and keyboard player Bret Pemelton spent much of the 80s playing the L.A. club circuit with various electronic rock bands as well as touring extensively throughout the US and Canada. PreCog joined the AnalogueTrash family in 2017, accompanied by the reissue of their 2016 debut long player, Are We Lost?, as well as an album of new material, Pareidolia. Valediction followed in 2020, with the band member’s other projects meaning that occasional standalone tracks were released in the subsequent years. Some of those tracks will appear on Other Side, with songs like Never Try, Stardust, and Take Me Anywhere getting an airing on label samplers, with accompanying videos available to view on YouTube. While the album had a long gestation process, with songs being recorded over the last few years, there’s a real unity of spirit and sound throughout the thirteen songs that comprise Other Side. Faith in ourselves and others – and the occasional loss of one or both – is a recurring theme throughout the album, as doubt, loss, and love make their presence known in a sensitive, relatable style. The album can be read as a series of elegies, but the craftsmanship of the lyrics leaves the listener room to interpret their subject matter through their own life experiences and empathise with the thoughtful, searching concepts that frame the album’s overall themes. The sound of PreCog on Other Side is hard to define, as ballads tumble into upbeat bops, and their electronic heart dovetails neatly into fevered guitar licks and Jason’s impassioned vocals, but there is a flow within the songs, and the album as a whole, that is easy to hear and feel. There’s no doubting that each track is polished and passionate, as the trio searches for a greater meaning, maybe even answers, to our daily experiences. Whether it’s the baroque grandeur of Only for a Moment, the driving tones of Lost My Faith in You, or the bittersweet joyousness of Stardust, Other Side shows that hope is an essential part of our lives, even in the darkest moments.
