Baltimore-based artist and producer Donnie Beach has spent the last decade-and-a-half honing his chops as a proficient songwriter and producer, working in a broad range of styles from industrial/metal and alt. rock, to new wave-influence electro-pop. Now, several years in the making, he at last unveils the debut album from Signs of the Past, his latest solo endeavor. The View From Below sees Beach ruminating on the cycles of mental trauma, emotional abuse, PTSD, toxic relationships, and struggles with personal identity - an intense and intimate album that deals heavily with the masks we don to function in an uncaring society that values productivity over personal well-being. Signs of the Past could not be more appropriately named. Written over the course of the past decade, The View From Below is an amalgam of new material and snippets culled from his past output - leftover lyrics from White Shadow and demos and musical elements from Neon Frame and Half Remembered Dreams - resulting in 10 tracks of darkly melodic and atmospheric electro-pop. Wrought with religious motifs and apocalyptic imagery, Beach lyrically confronts inner demons with a grimly confessional yet relatable tone. "I tried to capture how events just affecting one person, while invisible to others, can feel desperate and apocalyptic in nature," Beach says. From the hymnal and processional "The Pact" to the haunted "Breathe," the dancefloor desperation of "Dust" to the throbbing and entrancing "Thread the Needle" - sleek synthesizer passages interwoven with tight drum programming underscore expressive vocals, processed and layered with pitch-shifting and vocoders to achieve a choral fusion that is sure to ensnare you. "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Often attributed to Winston Churchill, but Signs of the Past takes this notion to heart with The View From Below, as the album sees Beach ascending from the ashes of what has been and gone. Fans of The Knife/Fever Ray, TR/ST, and Purity Ring are sure to find a kindred sound in Signs of the Past.
