DSM-V, the Australia-based duo of Marc Dwyer (Buzz Kull) and Morgan Wright (Acopia), presents their debut album, Life is Done, out September 8th through Third Coming Records (Paris). DSM-V was born out of a collaborative instinct Dwyer and Wright honed while sharing stages across the Australian underground. Life is Done was recorded in Crete, Greece, in 2019. The record is a spartan mix of nu beat and dark pop, armed with the rhythmic tools of EBM. It builds on the brutality and intensity of singles 'Into Nothing' and 'Function', while expanding on the softer, slippier sounds of club music. The songs are propelled by melancholic harsh electronics, gated reverbs, and FM bass lines. With the pandemic locking Dwyer and Wright down in separate cities - Sydney and Melbourne, respectively - the group was forced to finish the record in isolation. The natural response to living through desperate, alienated times is to make desperate, alienated music. The record confronts overlapping themes of loss, pain, and anguish, all the while yearning for dancefloor catharsis. "The songs were written at a time where we felt lost in a world without hope," explains Dwyer. Life is Done was mixed by Cameron Findlay (Kontravoid).
