Back in the late 90's, when the Internet first started to become a little bit more than the play thing of computer club geeks, I, like many others, had high hopes that this ability to share information with people around the the world at the touch of a button would bring about a new time of enlightenment for the human race. It was then that I first started using the words "Age of Information" to describe this golden era that we were entering, where people would finally be educated and informed and might finally drop their predijuices.
How very wrong was I. What I did not foresee was that information became like currency and it did not matter if that information was right or wrong, as long as it suited each individuals purpose. Not only was the internet filled with factual information, it was also flooded with false information, making it harder, not easier, to discern truth from lie. Meanwhile, people's true selves became more apparant, and the darkest, nastiest corners of their minds could finally come to light behind the internets anoymity as once removed from people's physical presence, they no longer felt the need to consider the consequences of their words.
The internet has become a battle ground, where who ever controls the information, regardless of it's accuracy, holds the power. Entire nations have taken sharp wrong turns, regressing rather than progressing, thanks in no small part to this digital war. Trolls lurk in every corner, seeking to mentally destroy others with little thought from themselves whilst new money is to be found both by fraudsters and marketeers alike.
I once thought this would be an enlightened age, but not any more. This dystopia we live in now is what has become of our "Age of Information."
