Renewing the magic of 80s-90s synth-pop and ebm is the reason for bringing us to Norway’s Mind & Flesh today. The Buried Lights of Oslo is the new 7-track release from them.
From CD Baby: “This is phase two of Mind & Flesh, moving onward from extreme industrial music to something that may sound more “easy” on the ears at first listen, yet still retain the intensity and harshness that have always been prevalent with this project”
From time to time we like to ignore context and just take a release for what it is. The Buried Lights of Oslo is like dusting off an old painting by one of the masters but using a fresh formula in the cleaner.
Mind & Flesh mixes styles of 80s/90s synth-pop and early techno industrial with a dash of new wave. The vocals are recorded with a pretty unique delivery as opposed to the over-used distortion method. Some of the beats are reminiscent of those classic 80s movies end-credits. At certain moments, (ex: “Acts of Death Worship”) there is a heavy use of thick, analog synth sounds. The analog sound is certainly the preferred method here which is the predominant reason the release sounds to honor the “old school.” With the low-end analog providing the groundwork, high note synth strikes guide us through the tracks much of the time.
The stand-out track for this editor without question is “As Cruel As Roses.” This track brings the perfect blend of old and new-school synth-pop. It’s nostalgic but yields a feeling of moving forward.
