"Innocence". To many, it is just one amongst a number of Pulse State
dancefloor anthems. To some, it is the flagship of the PS repertoire.
However, to project founder and sole member Mike Phipps, it is a
personal memoir of love, loss, joy, sadness, and death. Having
originated in late 2003 based on a conversation with a good friend
during a particularly rough spot in Mike's life, "Innocence" first
appeared in 2004 as a demo version. It was then reworked and released
again in 2005 on an early PS EP, then finally updated and issued yet
again as part of the debut album, With a Single Step (2008). And, for
many years, that's where the story of "Innocence" ended.
As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of Pulse State which kicked
off in June 2017, "Innocence" is presented once more, this time in an
all-new, reproduced, revocalized, and edited version, alongside two
other unreleased and updated works from the 2003 era of Pulse State. It
has long been thought that these works could one day be made even
better; the Innocence 2017 EP shows the fruits of those labors, while
serving as an appetizer for the ears in advance of the long-awaited
reissue of With a Single Step in 2018.
2003 may be long gone, and life may have changed drastically since then,
but the memories live on. This is 2017. This is "Innocence".
