Turku has always been the focal point of Finnish electronic music and it is also the home of Declasse, the latest signing of Solina Records. The title track on their first release, 12" maxi-single "Shadows" brought new meaning to the phrase mixed genres. Lyrics from the 15th century lute ballads by John Dowland, drums like early The Cure or New Order and the bass drones from the latest hi-tech hardware synths. The remix was from Finland`s uncrowned producer-king Jori Hulkkonen... With some TB-303 and stomp to fulfill all your needs. Declasse have sort of stormed onto the scene in the past year or so with a nicely-done "Shadows" release and now with their 8 track full-length album chock full of electronic-pop goodness. Everything old is new again as the band puts a slightly new spin on synthpop that bubbles with effervescence and flows by so smoothly that it's hard to find any offense with it.
Debut album "Remain still" is among the best records you'll hear all year! It's the first complete album made by Juha Virta and producer Jani Lehto (Star You Star me, Deep Sensuous Ensemble etc.).
Like any good crossover, Declasse's music needs no particular context to appreciate, via listening, one gets a sense of why: The battle they're waging here, is to give electronic music the human feel of teenage anthems and power ballads, it is the same one still being fought by any number of Germans and Brits; it's not constrained by time. The dark and slinky soul of the record-- the mix of domineering melodies and extreme tenderness-- don't hurt either.
