The Curse of Kairo (from Japanese «pulse») was once a myth, an urban legend on the outskirts of Asia. By the time of the album’s events, it had become a recognized pseudoscientific phenomenon among mystics and esotericists, while remaining rejected by scientists who regarded it as nothing more than an acute manifestation of mass psychosis. When morality sank so low that people began turning a blind eye to horrific social phenomena for the sake of their own safety, the city increasingly witnessed sophisticated, shocking, and brutal crimes committed by ordinary people. They became addicted to pleasure — not as a desire, but as a vital necessity. Those who could not reach the desired sensation died of cardiac arrest, screaming in delirium about one and the same figure that haunted them. It was this figure that turned the urban myth into something far more sinister and terrifying. The protagonist does not take these rumors seriously until, driving through a downpour, he fatally hits a girl who appears out of nowhere. Looking at her face, mutilated by terrible wounds, he feels horror and nausea — then suddenly flinches as his heart stops for a second from pleasure.
