Dramaturgy is the art of making sense of theatre, drawing out its meaning, imagery, symbolism and context. In sociology, as developed by Erving Goffman, dramaturgy refers to the way social interactions in everyday life resemble theatrical performances, where we all play roles specific to the situation, or to the stage we find ourselves on. For Goffman, our identities are not fixed, but shaped by the social setting, and by the way we present ourselves to the people around us. So our personalities and our characters are a performance, but one developed in collaboration with everyone we share our lives with.
