Paycheque is a Los Angeles-based duo consisting of Allison Goldfarb and Jackson MacIntosh (member of TOPS and Drugdealer), formed at the onset of the 2020 pandemic. Stylistically, their debut LP draws heavily on 1980s synth-pop, sophisti-pop, and new wave aesthetics, featuring hallmark gated drums and vintage hardware synthesizers. Conceptually, however, the record is deeply rooted in the realities of present-day Los Angeles, exploring themes of social impermanence, environmental anxiety, the fickleness of the entertainment industry, and working-class struggles. Musically, the album unfolds as a cinematic series of melancholic and wryly observational vignettes, blending polished pop sensibilities with guitar-driven indie and dub undertones.
