in april of 2005, DAVID THRUSSELL was approached to score the erotic feature film 'EROS MAXIMUS.' envisaged as a surreal collision of bronzed roman imperial tropes, sunburnt 'sword & sandal' aesthetics and sweaty orgiastic rituals, "eros maximus' had been described to thrussell as 'caligula on steroids' and clearly found inspiration in famously debauched roman emperors like heliogabalus and commodus.
soon, thrussell was commissioned to write a number of score pieces, prior to principal photography, to add atmosphere on-set and offer 'mood guidance.' and so, he assembled a studio band of accomplished musicians to perform his bossa rhythms, moog solos and string swells, in a style complimentary to the great italian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s.
anybody who works in the motion picture business knows that film financing can be a fraught affair. indeed, tragically, just one week before the beginning of principal photography a major financier pulled out and, now several million dollars short, the entire project collapsed.
today, almost twenty years later, all that survives are these spirited selections from thrussell's magnificent score and a handful of wardrobe test and production design stills. in the graveyard of abandoned films and dusty, forgotten projects, 'eros maximus' rests in a neglected corner, only david thrussell's sublime score of seductive latin shuffles and harpsichord trills standing in testament...to what might have been.
