From Gothenburg, Sweden comes the latest Scandinavian phenomenon Hearts of Black Science.
November 2005 childhood friends Daniel -nghede (Vocals, Guitars,
Bass) and Tomas Almgren (Synths, Programming, Beats) were brought
together again when Tomas returned to Sweden after seven years in
London and Berlin. Tomas had been pursuing a career as a horror
movie director, and Daniel's old band had just split up, they
decided to form a new band. Hearts of Black Science was born.
Tomas and Daniel set up a studio deep within an abandoned
subterranean power plant outside Gothenburg.
Isolated from the outside world they created a haven and spent
the first half of 2006 working day and night. They experimented
and developed their
own sound, melancholic and sometimes dark pop melodies, yet
uplifting and positive all at the same time. Not afraid to be
inspired by a broad range of styles and genres, gothic and metal,
shoegaze and eighties pop.
In April of 2006 the band released a self financed EP that sold
out in just 2 months on MySpace and a second EP was released the
following month. With nearly three hundred thousand plays they
developed a devoted following via the MySpace circuit, and played
their first gigs in London and Gothenburg.
The Ghost You Left Behind is the glorious culmination of those
months of isolation. Ten tracks plus the debut single Empty City
Lights, this collection of songs comfortably encapsulates all
thatOs great about Scandinavian pop, while at the same time
sounding completely fresh. If thereOs a need for references, then
mixing up a bit of Doves, some Ladytron, a smattering of Mew and
maybe M83 would be a good start, but thereOs a darker side as
well. Depeche Mode covered by Air, or The Killers covered by
Ulrich Schnauss. Truly irresistible...
